Lonnie Gordon

Lonnie's singing career began in New York with a group called Nyhtjar (she replaced Theolius monk's daughter as a vocalist) which she left after several years to do gigs in and about Harlem.

Although it's hard to imagine, Lonnie moved to Plymouth, England with her journalist husband and their daughter, and spent several years living quietly, raising her child and thinking about her future.

Following a move to London, she had a meeting with Supreme Records, who saw her as becoming the next Mel & Kim (Respectable; Swing Out). Eventually she met with Stock Aitken Waterman, the British production team responsible for the success of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Kylie Monogue and countless others. They had a song called Happenin' All Over Again which was meant for Donna Summer, but she had fallen out with them and so they were looking for a singer. Lonnie walked into the studio and sang Happenin' All Over Again . It was recorded in one day.

The success of the single lead to an album, recorded under the Supreme label and named "If I Have To Stand Alone". It contained several other charted hits, including the title track and Beyond Your Wildest Dreams.

It wasn't long after the album's release that Supreme Records began folding, possibly leaving Lonnie without a recording contract and wondering what to do next. She flew off to Italy and met Black Box (Ride On Time; I Don't Know Anybody Else) who had a hit album happening at the time. There she recorded "Gonna Catch You". She did half the album, but there were problems with Supreme back in Britain, who by this stage were going under and wanting to sell Lonnie off to someone else to make back some money. Lonnie was sold to SBK in America.

Despite her association with Sandy Gallin, who has managed the careers of Michael Jackson and Dolly Parton to name just a few, Lonnie remembers this period as being a turbulent time in her career. Not only were there more complications with her record company (massive firings and rumored financial mismanagement), but Lonnie had also left her husband back in England along with her daughter. The stress of leaving there two very important relationships took its toll on her. Riding a wave of bad luck, not long after having come to New York to pursue her career with her new label, Lonnie Gordon was dropped from the roster at SBK.

This was when Lonnie began her live performance career in earnest.

Monty Lipman, a former SBK promotions man, having just started a new company (Republic Records) together with a promotions man from VH-1 contacted Lonnie to do a record, Dirty Love. Around this time she also sang If You Really Love Me, which she co-produced for Flipside, a company started by a friend.

A video was shot for Dirty Love, and Madonna's brother Chris Ciccone shot the video for If You Really Love Me.

Lonnie's Beat the Street on Bounce Music is a perfect showcase for this artist. It proves beyond question that she has a voice that could blow the roof off any house, and the energy to make its walls come tumbling down. The production staff at Bounce are looking forward to further projects with Lonnie during the year 2000.
